NOTES FROM OUR WINEMAKER

2024 was a near-ideal growing season. Bud break occurred at an average time, which worked in our favor given the mild weather—very similar to 2023, but with an additional two weeks of hang time. Conditions were excellent for phenolic development, resulting in dense color across all vineyards. The extended hang time also contributed to great flavor development in all varieties. The vintage wasn’t without its challenges, however; during the second week of October, we received about an inch of rain. The winery responded quickly, harvesting all ripe fruit before the weather hit. The remaining fruit, which wasn’t yet ready, handled the rain well and was brought in on October 24.

2023 No. 39007 by The Prisoner

Our winemakers are perfectionists, intentionally selecting and artfully blending to create wines of exceptional character. Inspired by this dedication, No.39007 brings together two hand-selected batches—No. 39 Cabernet Sauvignon and No. 07 Syrah—resulting in a blend greater than the sum of its parts. The wine is showcased in a striking metal label, symbolizing the strong ring that binds each oak stave of a wine barrel, a nod to The Prisoner’s signature style of creating beauty from disparate elements. No.39007 opens with dominant aromas of blue and black fruits like blueberry, black currant, blackberry, and dried plum, layered with hints of nutmeg, clove, and vanilla. Silky on entry, the palate is rich and decadent, finishing clean with lingering notes of ripe blueberry, cassis, and subtle warming spices.

2024 Complicit Red Blend

A slightly warmer growing season in 2024 led to a softer mouthfeel and deeper dark fruit flavors in the wine, prompting us to pick the grapes a bit earlier than usual while maintaining our traditional vinification process. The fruit—comprising Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, and Petite Sirah—was hand-harvested early in the morning, destemmed, and fermented on the skins in stainless steel tanks, with careful daily tasting over a two-week fermentation to guide the perfect timing for draining. After pressing, the wine was aged for 10 months in a mix of Bourbon and Rye whiskey barrels, along with new and neutral wine barrels, to achieve a harmonious balance of vanilla, spice, and richness. The finished wine offers a soft mouthfeel, bright and dried red fruits, and a long, persistent finish, with inviting aromas of cranberry, dried plum, nutmeg, vanilla, cedarwood, and sandalwood.

2024 The Prisoner Red Blend

A slightly warmer vintage led to a fast harvest and quick ripeness, while cooler nights preserved acidity and freshness. Fruit was picked at optimal ripeness, and warm temperatures softened phenolics, resulting in a supple yet structured mouthfeel. Careful daily tastings guided perfect ferment and press decisions, with extra attention required due to high brix. Ultimately, the ripeness provided balance and freshness—a true expression of The Prisoner Red Blend. After aging 11 months in 35% new French and American oak barrels, the wine shows soft tannins, a long finish, and balanced red and black fruit with sweet spice. Aromas include cranberry, blackberry, currant, dried plum, caramelized vanilla, nutmeg, and toasted coconut.
