WINEMAKER NOTES

In the Vineyard

The 2024 growing season has officially begun as we are starting to see shoot growth in our vineyards. Next up with be bloom and fruit set. Chardonnay and Pinot are leading the pack, followed by Zinfandel, Syrah, and Cabernet right behind. We had a lot of rain this winter which means the soil is happy. While it is still a bit early to predict, the vines are showing signs of another great vintage.

In the Cellar

In the cellar we have bottled our white wines and are now preparing our red offerings. First to be bottled will be our 2022 Dérangé Red Blend, our 3rd volume of 2022 Corrections Reserve Red Wine, and the 2022 Sliver Red Wine. With the success of our first Winemakers Series earlier this year, we are excited to bottle the next rendition later next month. Of course, in the cellar we are not just bottling, we are racking the wines still in barrel, putting the finishing touches on our preliminary blending for the 2023 wines and receiving new barrels. In between all of this, we are planning for the growing season, checking in on the vineyards and preparing for the next. There is always something going on at The Prisoner Wine Company.

2023 Friction Viognier Oak Knoll Napa Valley

This is our second year making Friction and we are in love. We adore the varieties of the Rhone Valley, and Viognier is no exception. Viognier is variety loaded with aromatic and flavor intensity. The goal with this wine is to coax out the nuances and show the intense characters in harmony with one another with subtlety and elegance. The fruit is harvested a little less ripe than other varieties to capture more of the natural acidity and to hold up the wine and balance the oily nature of the variety. The grapes are fermented for two days in stainless steel tanks and then finished in neutral French Oak barrels. Notes of Meyer lemon zest, white peach, white flowers, and a hint of tangerine define the aromatic profile. The wine is elegantly structured with subtle tannins, and round edges driven by notes of citrus oil, limoncello and minerality with a crisp backbone.

2022 Headlock Charbono Napa Valley

The 2022 vintage was a challenging one with some major heat events just before harvest. The old Charbono vines have seen a lot, and while there were a few touch and go days, our Charbono held strong and stood up to the heat allowing the wine to maintain freshness. Classic characteristics of black pepper, dried cranberry, and nutmeg on the nose, and freshness on the palate display flavors of red stone fruit, pomegranate, salted watermelon. Elegantly balanced with a juicy mouthfeel that will pair excellently with summer barbeques.

2022 The Prisoner Limited Edition Red Wine Napa Valley

We are excited to present this new blend exclusively to our wine club family. When creating the blend for our signature Red Blend, we selected the very best barrels that we felt exemplified each of the individual varietals that makes our Red Blend so unique. We gave these barrels an extra 4 months of ageing to bring complexity and more integration of the oak. This wine displays all the characteristics of our signature Red Blend, we just turned up the volume a bit in terms of aromatic intensity, structure, and depth of flavor. Notes of clove, cola, black berries, currants, toasty vanilla, and hint of cream on the nose. The wine hits your palate with a soft entry and builds to a full mid palate and lengthy finish with intense dark fruits, and spice with hints of pink peppercorns, and dried bay leaf. We didn’t make much so stock up while you can, this wine won’t last long!
