WHAT DO YOU SEE?
Drawing inspiration from Rorschach tests and abstract expressionist paintings, the Winemaker Series labels reflect the fluid, nonconformist, creative freedom captured in every bottle. Your interpretation is part of the experience.
WHAT DO YOU TASTE?
The Winemaker Series features three strikingly different styles of classic varietals. The vineyards and winemaking techniques used to create this series offers a glimpse into the minds of our winemakers. From the deep, inky purples of Malbec and blueish tint of Zinfandel to the rich black fruits of Petit Verdot and red fruits and herbal notes of Cabernet Sauvignon, each wine in the series showcase a deeper exploration into The Prisoner Wine Company’s classic yet moody interpretation of Napa Valley.

2022 Red Wine | Malbec & Petit Verdot
Sourced from one of our internal vineyards in the heart of Stags Leap AVA, the fruit from this property continues to prove itself to be the top performer consistently year after year. We love the density of color, flavor and texture that each varietal demonstrates. This wine is made from two blocks that were destined for replant right after harvest on a beautiful little hill right in the middle of the vineyard. On one side is Malbec that sees the sun in the morning, and on the other side Petit Verdot that gets the sun in the heat of the day. Due to these factors, these blocks tend to ripen at the same time, so we decided to harvest them together and ferment them together. Each brings value to the other creating a very harmonious blend where Malbec brings elegance, richness and purple fruit, while Petit Verdot brings power, color and savory blue fruit. We were so stoked with the resulting wine, we felt it necessary to include it in this collection and share with everyone!
TASTING NOTES: Amazingly dark in the glass with blue and purple fruit, tasted brioche, reduced blueberry chutney and hints of spiced bacon fat aromas. Ample tannins provide a smooth yet firm structure from the balanced acidity and notes of dried currant, vanilla, dried blackberry, and savory dried herbs.
2022 Red Hills Cabernet Sauvignon
Located in the northern Mayacamus Mountains, the Red Hills of Lake County frames the southwest edge of Clear Lake. Comprised of dozens of volcanic hills ranging from 1,350 to over 3,700 feet above sea level. As a result of the altitude, our vineyards are exposed to sunshine that is more intense than that at lower altitudes, allowing for grapes to develop thicker skins and therefore higher phenolics or tannins. The altitude also means that nights are considerably colder, lengthening the ripening season and maintaining valuable acidity in the grapes. We chose to showcase this vineyard in the Winemaker's Series for 2022 because of these unique factors that allowed for this fruit to really shine. The resulting wine has a great deal of power in a relatively soft vintage. We didn't have to change much in our winemaking practice to coax the beauty out of this wine, making it very special to us and very fun to share with everyone!
TASTING NOTES: Densely dark in color with dried currant, bramble fruits, dried sage, and subtle wet rock aromas. Notes of dark red and black fruit, black cherry, dried currants, and dark accents are held together with energetic but elegant tannins and balanced acidity.
2022 Yountville Zinfandel
Planted and farmed in the 1970s by Larry Bettinelli and his father-in-law, Irv Tiedemann, we are pleased to showcase a single vineyard Zinfandel from this outstanding vineyard. Located in the heart of Napa, the vineyard blocks are a perfect showcase of both head trained and wire-trained Zinfandel and showcases the complexity this varietal is capable of achieving.
TASTING NOTES: Enticingly ripe red and purple berries, dried black cherries, cocoa nibs, black peppercorn, vanilla nutmeg, and clove aromas leap out o the bottle. Notes of boysenberry compote and pie crust accompany a dense fruit core and soft juicy tannins that lead to a long and spicy finish.
