WINEMAKER UPDATE

The winery and vineyards are always quiet over the holidays. Northern California, including Napa & Sonoma continues to enjoy steady rainfall. Adequate rainfall during these dormant months help replenish soil moisture, which is crucial for crop growth and development. The rain also recharges groundwater supplies and reservoirs which can be beneficial for irrigation during the growing season if needed.

It is quiet in the vineyards and while we have had a few cold days, it hasn't been cold enough for hard dormancy. So, to mitigate the risk of frost damage, we will hold on pruning as long as we can. We are also looking forward to the beauty of mustard blooming in the coming weeks. Mustard as a cover crop can serve a practical service for vineyards helping to control other weeds and reduce soil erosion, it is still a weed and offers little else in terms of viticulture.

Meanwhile, at the winery, we are working on solidifying our white blends as well as tasting through the entire 2024 inventory. That is quite the task but with another delicious vintage, this is always an enjoyable and rewarding part of the process. Our cellar team is attending to the wines, topping barrels and putting together bottling blends. We love sharing our wines with you and look forward to another exciting season.

2022 Thorn Merlot Napa Valley

Working with our growers in Napa Valley, we have wonderful access to small, premium vineyard lots of Merlot, which served as our inspiration to create Thorn. The Merlot was blended with a touch of Petite Verdot to help give its inky color and little Malbec to accentuate the fruit.

The 2022 growing season started with average rainfall that enabled bud break to begin on time. Followed by a mild summer that led to quick veraison and even ripening. A major heatwave after Labor Day created some challenges for the Napa Cabernet vineyards and we did make a few fermentation changes. The other red grapes were less affected, and the heat allowed for the ripening of tannins that lead this vintage towards a softer mouthfeel and fruit forward flavors.

Mixed berry coolis, sweet spices and hints of cocoa tease your nose. The palate is soft and plush with a full mid palate and a sturdy, lengthy finish. Flavors of black berries, and dried red berries, dominate with hints of holiday spices carrying through to the finish.

This new vintage will bill on February 4th and ship on February 18th.

2022 The Prisoner Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

Redefining taste once again, this Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is a mix of Russian River and Petaluma Gap AVAs. Russian River valley’s diverse terroir contributes to a wide range of styles and the cool, foggy climate of the Petaluma Gap produces wines with a distinctive coastal minerality.

The 2022 vintage commenced about 3-4 weeks behind the previous 10 vintages due heavy rainfall and cold temperatures that lasted into May. The late summer start and above average rainfall created some anxiety around the valley; however, with a long and mild summer, which enabled a longer hang time, we ended up with amazing flavor development as well as beautiful colors and phenolics. The perfect building blocks for wonderfully balanced and delicious wines across the board.

Ripe cranberry and dried black cherry dominate the nose followed by early floral notes and hints of mocha, chai and leather. The mouthfeel is luxurious with juicy black cherry and spice midpalate and notes of Cardamom and clove on the lengthy and complex finish.

This new vintage will bill on February 4th and ship on February 18th.

2021 The Prisoner Chardonnay Carneros

Made in the same iconic style as The Prisoner Red Blend, we proudly introduce The Prisoner Chardonnay. The 2021 vintage is a blend of Chardonnay, Viognier, and Gewürztraminer, aged 10 months in 50% new French oak barrels.

Working with a family of growers, our hand-picked grapes are pressed immediately to separate the juice from the skins and seeds. Once the juice has settled overnight, it’s inoculated with yeast and moved to barrels to ferment. After the primary period of fermentation, the barrels are stirred every other week to perfect the wine’s balance and acidity.

This wine is a testament to the Carneros region. Known for their creamy texture, intense fruit character, and bright acidity, this vintage showcases of all this and more! Notes of apricot and yellow peach are accented by toasted marshmallow, dried pineapple, vanilla, and lemon zest. On the palate, lemon zest and peach cobbler are balanced with a bright acidity. Golden delicious apple, marzipan, and toasted coconut linger on the finish.

2022 Blindfold Blanc de Noir (Line Up 6 members)

Featuring a fan favorite, our 2022 Blindfold Blanc de Noir is mostly Pinot Noir with a touch of Pinot Grigio, Grenache, and Gewürztraminer.

Using one of the best cool climate Sonoma County vineyards for this vintage, fruit was harvested in the middle of the night, pressed right at the vineyard and the juice was shipped direct to the winery. By pressing these grapes within minutes of being harvested, we were able to limit the skin contact and achieve the style of a light, fresh, and delicate Blanc de Noir.

Fresh and full of early season honeydew melon and cantaloupe and watermelon candies on the nose while the palate soars with the light-bodied, delicate but lively flavors of citrus zest and subtle perfumed red fruits and cranberry.

2021 The Prisoner Corrections Malbec Finding Flowers Napa Valley (Fringe members)

Artist Chris Burnett has worked with publications like The New York Times and The Washington Post to address social issues through art. In Burnett’s work, humanity emerges from within a chaotic system. The rips and tears capture a righteous anger and passion for change, but motifs like flowers and forward gazes act as metaphors for growth, progress, and freedom.

Featuring the last of this spectacular offering, this 100% Malbec was aged for ten months in new and neutral oak barrels to evoke a soft entry on the palate, long tannins, and tasting notes of mineral, purple fruit, and leather.

2022 Winemakers Series Syrah Limited Release front of label

2022 Winemaker Series Syrah Viognier (Fringe members)

The 2022 Winemaker Series offers a glimpse into the minds of our winemakers. The vineyards and winemaking techniques used to create these wines reflect the nonconformist, creative freedom of the vintage.

Syrah and Viognier were harvested on the same day from the same vineyard. All of the fruit was gently destemmed together into the same stainless-steel tank. Fermentation and maceration lasted 14 days and then the wine was transferred to 35% new French oak barrels for 10 months of maturation. Syrah is full of color, and Viognier has a crazy density of aromas in addition to tannin that binds with the color of Syrah to make a beautifully dense and stable color. This wine will age for 10-15 years but is designed to drink now.
