2023 The Prisoner Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast
Redefining taste once again, this Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is a mix of Russian River and Sonoma Coast. Russian River valley’s diverse terroir contributes to a wide range of styles and the cool, foggy climate of the Petaluma Gap produces wines with a distinctive coastal minerality.
Ripe Cranberry, pomagranate, and cherry on the nose are spiced with clove, nutmeg and a hint of vanilla. Additional nuance on the nose evokes thoughts of forrest floor, earthy mushrooms, and mossy tree bark. On the palate, red fruit and spice drive with balanced acidity and ample velvety tannin structure. This pinot is fruit forward and powerful, but still elegantly balanced.
2023 The Prisoner Limited Edition Red Blend Napa Valley
When creating the blend for our signature Red Blend, we selected the very best barrels that exemplified each of the varietals that make our Red Blend so unique. We gave these barrels an extra four months of aging to bring complexity and more integration of the oak. This wine displays all the characteristics of our signature Red Blend; we just turned up the volume a bit in terms of aromatic intensity, structure, and depth of flavor.
The nose boasts notes of clove, cola, black berries, currants, toasty vanilla, and a hint of cream. The wine hits your palate with a soft entry and builds to a full mid-palate and lengthy finish with intense dark fruits and spice, with hints of pink peppercorns and dried bay leaf. We didn't make much, so stock up while you can—this wine won't last long!
2023 Thorn Merlot Napa Valley
The 2023 vintage in Napa Valley started three to four weeks later than usual, after a winter marked by nearly 40 inches of rain and lingering cold temperatures into spring. Although the delayed start caused some concern about a late harvest and early autumn rains, a long, mild summer extended well into October. This extended growing season resulted in remarkable flavor development, vibrant color, and balanced phenolics, providing an excellent foundation for crafting beautifully balanced and delicious wines.
Thanks to the lengthy season, our team was able to make careful picking decisions, achieving a signature soft yet structured mouthfeel in the 2023 wines. The robust tannins called for adjustments in cap management, including increased oxygen during pump-overs and more frequent, shorter sessions to ensure proper extraction. Each vineyard block was kept separate through barreling until March, then blended and returned to barrels for a few more months to perfect the mouthfeel. Thorn, in particular, was aged for 16 months in 50% new French barrels before bottling.
2023 Winemaker Series Grenache (Fringe Members)
The 2023 Winemakers Series Grenache is sourced from Gordon Valley, a warmer Napa location reminiscent of Paso Robles, with its rolling hills and oak trees. The extended vintage allowed for optimal ripening and phenolic maturity, while larger tannins in 2023 led us to adjust cap management for better balance. After pressing, the wine aged 15 months in a mix of large format and standard barrels, with only 300 cases produced. The 2023 Grenache (with 3% Syrah) reveals ripe black raspberry and strawberry, floral hints, sandalwood, cedarwood, and dried herbs. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with silky yet structured tannins and bright acidity that accentuates the vibrant fruit flavors.
The 2023 vintage started 3-4 weeks later than average due to heavy rainfall and cool spring temperatures, followed by a long, mild summer in Napa Valley. This extended growing season allowed grapes to develop exceptional flavors, color, and phenolics, resulting in beautifully balanced wines. We're excited to release these wines from such a remarkable vintage.
