The 2023 Pastori Vineyard Zinfandel from Alexander Valley benefited from an unusually wet winter and a mild, steady growing season, with late harvest yielding small, concentrated grapes of exceptional quality. Hand-harvested from old vines at Pastori, the fruit was fermented in stainless steel for freshness, with a portion of juice removed by saignée to intensify flavor and color. Aging in 40% new American oak barrels and malolactic fermentation further softened acidity and enhanced texture, resulting in a vibrant, balanced wine that is both immediately enjoyable and age-worthy.

On the palate, this wine is supple and refined, with silky tannins and a graceful, uninterrupted flow. Vibrant acidity elevates flavors of red currant, raspberry pie, and black cherry.  Subtle, well-integrated oak adds layers of brown spice, enhancing complexity without overshadowing the fruit. The finish is long and harmonious, with fruit, acid, and texture in perfect balance.

The nose is immediately inviting, with concentrated brambly dark fruit, cranberry, and dark cherry layered over fig paste and hints of blackberry. Subtle notes of pepper and clove add warmth and complexity, while a touch of strawberry jam and baking spice provides sweetness and depth. Overall, the aromatics are rich yet fresh, balancing bold fruit with gentle spice.

The fruit from Pastori was hand harvested from old vines across the property.  Primary fermentation lasted approximately 7 to 10 days in stainless steel tanks, to preserve freshness and the vibrant fruit character of the variety. To further concentrate color and flavor, 5% of juice was removed early in the process using the saignée technique. After fermentation, the wine was transferred to barrels to complete malolactic fermentation, which softens acidity and enhances mouthfeel. The wine matures and ages in oak barrels, with 40% new oak, predominantly American in origin. This combination of techniques contributes to a Zinfandel that is richly textured and expressive, featuring well-integrated oak spice alongside the grape’s signature fruitiness.
